Stan Grant joins ABC radio

SBS TV Newsreader Stan Grant has agreed to present ABC local radio’s weekly indigenous affairs program, Speaking Out, in addition to his TV job
This is his first time talking about indigenous issues in the mass media and he told Sue Javes:

“Early in my career, I made a decision to stay right away from indigenous journalism because of the fear of being marginalised, but I’ve done a lot of things since then, so I can come to the program from a position of strength.”

Speaking Out has existed as a niche program for Aboriginal communities for seventeen years now and it is believed that Grant will create an exciting and targeted show which fits between Monica Attard’s Sunday Profile and Jon Cleary’s Sunday Night Talk.

Grant aims to stay away from stereotypes in Aborigional media and culture.

“There’ll be no Aunty this or Uncle that, I find that too exclusive, a bit patronising and parish pump. I’m not there talking to my relatives. I’m speaking to a broader audience about issues that go to the very heart and soul of what it is to be an Australian.”

He says there are more views within Aboriginal society than ever before and he intends to devote a segment each week to Aboriginal thinkers – from segregationists through to Noel Pearson, the academic Marcia Langton and the rugby league player David Peachey

Speaking Out with Stan Grant begins on Sunday, October 7.
