UN hosts Global Media and Information Literacy Week conference

Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week is an annual event observed from October 24 to 31 to raise awareness and celebrate the progress achieved towards Media and Information Literacy for all.

In 2021, the UN General Assembly decided to commemorate Global (MIL) Week, to emphasize the need for factual, timely, targeted, clear, accessible, multilingual and science-based information. The resolution acknowledges that the significant digital divide and data disparities between countries and within them, can be addressed in part by enhancing people’s competencies to seek, receive and share information in the digital realm.

During the MIL Week, stakeholders around the world organize events and UNESCO co-hosts with a Member State the global conference gathering the Media and Information Literacy community.

This year’s Global MIL Week Conference will be hosted by UNESCO and the Republic of Colombia on 23 and 24 October 2025 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The theme of Global MIL Week 2025 is Minds Over AI – MIL in Digital Spaces.

It will focus on the intersections of media and information literacy (MIL) and artificial intelligence (AI), exploring how AI is reshaping the information landscape and how MIL is crucial to empower individuals to critically engage with AI-driven content.

The theme highlights the need to safeguard truth, foster trust, and strengthen civic engagement amid algorithm-driven environments.

The event will also advocate for integrating AI-related challenges into educational curricula and developing governance frameworks that ensure transparency, accountability, and digital inclusion.

Special emphasis will be placed on the role of youth, who are among the most active users of digital technologies. Through several initiatives, young voices will help co-create narratives around responsible AI propose innovative solutions, and articulate concerns about their digital futures.

“In a world where artificial intelligence increasingly curates our choices, filters our realities, and shapes our beliefs, media and information literacy is not optional, it is essential. This year’s theme, ‘Minds over AI,’ is a call to place human judgment and critical thinking at the heart of our digital future,”said Tawfik Jelassi Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO.

In addition to the Feature Conference in Cartagena de Indias, events will also be organized across the globe, reinforcing the worldwide movement toward MIL for all.
