Vale George Zangalis

A memorial service was held recently for George Zangalis who passed away on March 25th.

George was well known in ethnic and community radio, and is credited with pioneering Ethnic Community Broadcasting. He sat on the board of SBS and was President and a lead broadcaster for Melbourne’s ethnic radio station, 3ZZZ, and a former president of the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters’ Council of Australia.

George came to Australia in 1951, and began work at GMH, beginning his battle for migrant workers rights shortly after joining the trade union.

A well-known member of the Communist Youth Party of Australia, and then the main Communist Party, George was an outspoken critic of the White Australia Policy, and a great believer in the great Australian policy of giving people a “Fair Go”.

George also became involved in Ethnic Communities councils and wrote a book, Migrant Workers and Ethnic Communities: Their Struggles for Social Justice and Cultural Rights: The Role of Greek-Australians.

George was one of the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria founders and served on the Board several times over its 47-year history.

He died ahead of a tribute to his life being planned for his 90th birthday in April.
