Vale Phil Hunter and The Hon. Nick Jones

Two of Australian radio’s best liked characters the Hon Nick Jones and Phil Hunter have passed away.

Ian Wright broke the news on the Radio Green Room fb page where tributes are pouring in. Wright posted: Extremely sad to report the death of two legendary radio personalities. After a number of years of poor health, in both cases, we have lost my good friend Phil Hunter (ex 2KO, 2UW, ABC Radio and the record/movie retailing business) pictured at a recent Birthday celebration and Ian MacRae’s 2SM sidekick of many moons, Hon. Nick Jones (pictured with Ian in 2017).

Rest In Peace gents. Thank you for your talent and contribution to Australian radio and condolences to all family members and close friends.

MacRae and The “Hon” Nick Jones once stood for election to the Senate on such policies as promises to build a piggery in Mosman and declare war on the Antarctic. Their slogan was “Put a stinker in the Chamber!” The couple got so many votes they were quite concerned that they would have to actually go to Canberra.

This update and background on the Hon Nick Jones from Nick’s daughter Amabelle Dalton-Jones thanks to the 2SM fans Facebook page.

HON NICK JONES

Nicholas Eugene Jones
Born 11/1/1937 Hythe, Kent, England – Passed 2/6/2019 Sydney, Australia

With much sadness, we wish to share the news that on Sunday morning our brilliant, hilarious, crazy, gentle, huge-hearted and ginormous-minded Dad, the Hon Nick Jones passed peacefully. He joins his Beloved, our Mum, Mary who passed just a few months ago. True love birds together again, setting upon new adventures and discoveries together.

In the spirit of his generous and joyful charachter, we wish to invite you all to join us for his last hoorah. If you would like to join us please contact me, his youngest, [email protected] and I will send you all the details.

If you are unable to do so… we have a very important request. Over the years, memorabilia has sadly gone missing and we have recovered some but certainly not all. And certainly not in high definition/quality. We ask you to please share your collection with us with regards to Dad’s career and 2SM. And if you can copy any photos, articles, audio or video in high resolution/definition for us… even better. Anything you may have. His lasting legacy is the humour and intellect which he shared with all of us. And as a family, we are very keen to collate as much as we can for ourselves and for the next generation to enjoy.

We have been so very chuffed to see your enthusiastic responses with regards to Dad’s memory. Thank you so much for your support. And for enjoying our Dad as much as we did, do and will forever.

Hail the Hon Nick!
The Jones Family

Ian MacRae offered the following recollection of his time with the “Hon” Nick Jones

“It all began when I read a story in the Manly Daily about a bloke who had started a political party called The National Colonialist Party with the platform of establishing a piggery in the upper class Sydney suburb of Mosman. I figured that could be an election winner, so I had him come into the station. He introduced himself as The Hon Nick Jones but, he said, “…you can call me Hon.”

And that’s how it all began. Years of crazy stunts and endless breakfast time laughs.

Some of these can be seen and heard on Debbie Kruger’s great tribute to the old 2SM .

The last time I saw Nick was 3 months ago at the funeral for his beloved wife Mary – his partner in their one and only marriage. The lovely lady who Nick always introduced as: “My first wife”. It was a given that Nick wouldn’t want to hang around for long after Mary passed. Vale The Hon. Nick Jones, a brilliant man and my friend on and off-air.”

The funeral service for the Hon Nick Jones will be at St Mary’s Immaculate Catholic Church in Manly at 11:00am next Tuesday, 11th June.

The Church within the St Mary’s Primary School, 31 Whistler St, Manly, just a lovely, flat, short stroll from Manly Wharf.
