Why isn’t free to air radio on your cell phone?

In the United States the campaign to get radio receivers into cell phones is driving ahead, with the radio industry releasing an advertisement which says radio is necessary in disasters and asking ‘why isn’t radio on your cell phone?’

The ad refers to snow storms earlier this year in Washington where houses were wrecked and many residents were without power, telephone and Internet services. “But radio was there,” says the ad.

The advertisement points out that families lucky enough to own battery-powered radios had one of the only sources of information during the days when the entire city was incapacitated and suggests that if every cell phone had been equipped with a radio receiver more people would have been able to receive news about emergency help.
