On February 13th, the world will celebrate UNESCO’s World Radio Day (WRD) under the 2026 theme: “Radio and Artificial Intelligence.“
Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO Member States and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, World Radio Day (WRD) is celebrated every February 13. It is a Day to thank broadcasters for the news they deliver, the voices they amplify, the enjoyment they bring and the stories they share.
As artificial intelligence reshapes the landscape of media production and distribution, this edition invites all voices to come together and reflect on the ethical, accessible, and creative future of radio.
Today Artificial Intelligence (AI) opens a new chapter: not just for innovation but for deepening radio’s bond with listeners.
When used ethically and responsibly to support professional judgement, creativity, social connection and public service values, AI can become an ally in strengthening audience trust.
Technology alone does not build trust. Radio broadcasters do.
AI is “a tool, not a voice” that uses innovation to empower broadcasters to do their work better if used well. Some guidelines from the WRD team for using AI include:
- Ease and Flow, letting technology take care of the routine tasks, such as scheduling, voice-tracking, daily weather or sports updates, administrative chores, so your team can focus on what truly matters: inform, educate, entertain.
- Meaningful Growth, understanding your audience more deeply, connecting ads to listener needs, improving revenue.
- Listener Empowerment, helping every listener feel included, offering personalized experiences, real-time interaction, and space for under-represented voices that deserve to be heard.
- Quality Content, using AI to support fact-checking, source verification, rediscovery of archival richness and increased factuality, while keeping human judgment at the center.
World Radio Day provides a unique platform for broadcasters, organizations, and individuals to celebrate radio’s past achievements and its future potential. On February 13, 2026, communities around the globe are invited to take part in broadcasts, discussions, and educational events that spotlight the lasting influence of radio. Join the global celebration to support radio as a powerful force for unity, education, and cultural exchange.
