Hamish and Andy still aloft the Australian Podcast Ranker

May’s Triton Australian Podcast Ranker saw no change in the top five most listened to Australian podcasts with Hamish and Andy, Casefile True Crime and ABC News Top Stories 1, 2 & 3 respectively. The top three publishers were again ARN/iHeart at No 1, LiSTNR (SCA) at 2, and the ABC at 3.

A little further down the ranker were some interesting debuts, resurgence of catch up radio podcasts, increases in sports listening and reality star podcast engagement and the biggest growth for SBS News.

The 2024 Global Digital News Report named SBS the most trusted brand for news in Australia. The Report was released in June with that listener trust and engagement demonstrated in this Ranker – SBS News in Depth was up 72 places to #38 and while their news updates were down this month, I expect that there will be an increasing uptake in both in the coming ones. The ABC’s Top News Stories and News Daily, the latter of which is making a push for the top 10, up 4 to #11 this month, have between them nearly three million monthly downloads.

Catch up radio podcasts generally had a good month too. Kyle and Jackie O picked up steam and were up 3 spaces to #6. Fifi Fev and Nick at The Fox FM were up 34 to #151, 2GB’s Ben Fordham and Triple M Melbourne‘s Marty Sheargold increased their listening. Robin and Kip at KIIS in Brisbane debuted at #165 and Nova 100′s Jase and Lauren returned to the Ranker two places higher at #163.

SEN Breakfast continues off the back of a successful GfK Radio 360 Survey 3 with it being the highest ranking sporting program, up 5 to 24 with the ABC’s SPORT Daily also in the top 30.

Finally, and something of a surprise to me, was the invigoration of listening to society and culture podcasts. Sit with Us, hosted by former MAFS participants Ella and Dom was up a whopping 87 to #45. Abbie Chatfield’s It’s A Lot and Happy Hour with Lucy & Nikki both moved up the top 20. Darling, Shine! and KICPOD also increased their audiences.

The highest debut was Nine Radio‘s new collaboration with The Age following the Missing Campers Trial.
