Hamish and Andy on top, big gains for Hedley Thomas – Australian Podcast Ranker

It was business as usual in this month’s Triton Australian Podcast Ranker with Hamish and Andy on top and Casefile True Crime second, both with more than two million monthly downloads.

Shameless and Mamamia Out Loud switched into third and fourth respectively with the independent Bloke in a Bar up four to 10th and the only new entry in the top ten.

2023 ACRA winning Podcast Host of the Year Abbie Chatfield’s It’s a Lot was up two to 16th and Best Sports Presenter Gerard Whateley’s Whateley podcast up 4 to 33. Daily news and information podcasts The Quicky, from Mamamia was up 11 to 20th and LiSTNR’s The Briefing up 9 to 24. LiSTNR podcasts made up 20 of the top 50, more than any other network.

The biggest movers in this ranker were Newscorp and Nova Entertainment publications, all hosted by award winning investigative journalist Hedley Thomas’s, The Teacher’s Trial, Shandee’s Story and The Teacher’s Pet. The Teacher’s Pet, released back in 2018, has been downloaded globally more than 60 million times and is the only Australian podcast to be No 1 in Australia, New Zealand, the US and UK.

Thomas has released a new book called The Teacher’s Pet which is a far more personal story than just a rehash of the investigative process that led to the conviction of Chris Dawson in 2022. The book release and conversational tour have seen the podcasts jump up the ranker again with The Teacher’s Trial up 75 to 47, Shandee’s Story up 80 to 58 and The Teacher’s Pet up 17 to 67. The three had 600K downloads across last month.

Radioinfo’s Jen Seyderhelm chatted with Hedley Thomas about the podcasts and the personal side of Thomas revealed in the book with the interview below.
