A pioneer of community broadcasting and 2022 Michael Law Award recipient for outstanding lifetime achievement, Philip Shine passed away on Wednesday September 25.
Philip began volunteering in the early 1990s at Sydney’s Eastside Radio, later becoming Station Manager and making the station known for supporting creative jazz and roots music. He moved to 2SER and was their Station Manager for a decade, also serving on the CBAA Board and taking charge of community broadcasting’s implementation of the Digital Radio Project (DRP).
In 2011 Philip moved to Byron Bay and to BayFM where he became their first Station Manager. BAY FM flourished under his leadership. At the 2022 CBAA Awards they received The Tony Staley Award for excellence in upholding the values of democracy, diversity, access and independence, The Award for Excellence in News & Current Affairs Programming for the BayFM Community Newsroom‘s reporting and response to the Northern Rivers Flood Disaster and for Philip personally, The Michael Law Award for outstanding individual contribution to community broadcasting.
“We extend our sincere condolences to Philip’s partner and former Byron Shire Councillor, Cate Coorey and to Philip’s children Dom, Gabe, Sam, Jessica and Tobias.
Mia Armitage from BayFM’s Community Newsroom is working on a tribute to Philip that will be aired soon. We hope this will be a fitting way to honour Philip’s rich legacy.”
