Iraqi terrorist target Nick Berg was a radio tower technician

Nick Berg, the man beheaded in that gruesome terrorist online video, was in Iraq doing work on radio towers for the new regime.

Berg was an “outstanding” radio engineer who, at age 26, had already created the Pennsylvania-based Prometheus Methods Tower Service.

He owned a small business that worked with communication equipment such as radio towers, and had traveled to Third World countries to help spread technology. He had recently done work on a new 850-foot tower for Citadel’s Hawk FM in Binghamton.

He was interested in international humanitarian work and had made several trips to Third World countries – at one point teaching villagers in Ghana how to make bricks. His Iraq trip aimed at helping the country rebuild its infrastructure.

The video was posted earlier this week on an Islamic militant Web site and showed a group affiliated with al-Qaida beheading the Jewish-American. The website said the beheading was revenge for the prisoner-abuse scandal.

ABC Radio National covers the topic of Iraq today in The Media Report with a feature called ‘Losing the PR war: The Arab media’s view of Iraq.’ The program looks at how the media in the Arab world has dealt with revelations of the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. (click below for program link).
